Guitar amp tube socket smoking1/12/2024 You'll have to spend effort and money, but that is the professional way to deal with it. Good thing the dude had a fire extinguisher!Īnyway, in my experience, you need to find a good amp technician who is completely familiar with Fender amps. Then again, have you ever seen a tube amp go up in smoke? The most impressive I've seen was a 1960s real British Vox AC30, which totally went up in flames in the club. I even knew guys that put tinfoil in place of a blown fuse (very, very bad). Gone are the days of my youth where we would do anything to keep an amp going for the gig, like pounding on it, or swapping tubes randomly (not recommended), and other stupid and dangerous stuff. personally, I decided that if I was going to have finicky (but cool) tube amps, it would be inevitable to expect maintenance over the years. Maybe weak power tubes could make that sound? It doesn't sound like something rattling in the room, nor does it sound like a microphonic preamp tube. It almost reminds me of a sound when a speaker has a weakness in it, but that's a random guess. Since I'm a player and not a tech, I couldn't say for sure what's going on. That seems to be the nature of the beast. Hmm, I've owned many vintage Fender amps over the years (still own a '65 Vibrolux Reverb and a silverface Champ), and they all have made strange noises from time to time. Here's the video I shot of me demonstrating the problem.Īny ideas on what the problem could be are most welcomed. Is it a speaker problem or a tube problem? The Fender Twin amp I bought new in the early 2000's and never had any work done on it.īut recently I've noticed this distorted sound that comes and goes (intermittent) when I strike the lower notes on the thicker strings of the guitar. These pickups in my guitar are the original humbucking pickups that came in the guitar as I purchased it (the guitar) new in 1991. If strike a series of notes on the low E string, starting on a G - F# - E and/or various low note runs - sometimes I will hear those notes distorted when I have a minimal, almost no distortion selected on my amp. ![]() I don't know if it's me or the guitar amp but recently I've noticed a bit of a distorted noise (intermittent) coming from my speakers when I strike a low bass note on a string of my electric guitar.
